Mountain & Volcanic Hikes

The mountainous regions of Uganda and Rwanda provide a dramatically rugged backdrop for adventure tourism, particularly within the Virunga Volcanoes chain, which straddles their shared border.
In Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, popular day hikes include the challenging ascent of Mount Bisoke to its stunning crater lake, and the two-day trek up Mount Karisimbi,

the highest peak in the range at 4,507 meters. Across the border in Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, hikers often tackle Mount Sabyinyo, whose summit uniquely allows a hiker to stand in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo simultaneously. Beyond the Virungas, Uganda is also home to the formidable Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon), offering multi-day expeditions to snow-capped peaks. These hikes not only challenge trekkers with varied difficulty and stunning alpine scenery but also traverse key conservation areas, sometimes offering glimpses of golden monkeys and contributing directly to the preservation of the Albertine Rift's endemic biodiversity.
